AI Recommendation Optimization: How to Become the Brand AI Assistants’ Suggest
AI recommendation optimization is the practice of increasing how often, how accurately, and how favorably AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews name your brand when a buyer asks them for advice. For marketing leaders, it has quietly become one of the most consequential visibility questions of the decade. A founder types, “What’s the best CRM for a 10-person agency?” A procurement lead asks which logistics partner best handles cold-chain freight. The assistant answers with three or four names and a sentence of reasoning for each. There is no page two. Either your brand is in that answer, or a competitor is shaping your buyer’s shortlist without you in the room.
The numbers say this shift is no longer theoretical. Adobe Digital Insights reported that traffic from AI sources to U.S. retail sites grew 393% year over year in the first quarter of 2026. More telling, visitors arriving from AI sources converted 42% better than non-AI traffic in March 2026, a full reversal from March 2025, when they converted 38% worse. At the same time, a Pew Research Center analysis of 900 U.S. adults found that people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary itself only 1% of the time.
Put those findings side by side, and the message is uncomfortable, but clarifying. Fewer people are clicking, yet those who do arrive via an AI recommendation are further along and ready to buy. A place on the shortlist is becoming more valuable every quarter, and being left off it is becoming more expensive. If you have sat through one too many agency reports celebrating impressions that never became pipeline, this shift should feel less like a threat and more like a correction. As we argued in Your Website Traffic Means Nothing If Nobody Remembers You, visibility only matters when it turns into recall and trust. AI assistants are now one of the places where that trust is formed.
This guide is written for leaders who refuse to operate on guesswork. It explains how AI assistants decide which brands to recommend, what the research actually shows rather than what the hype cycle claims, and a disciplined plan for becoming the name they suggest. Our conviction at JOS is simple: you cannot earn a recommendation from a machine until you understand the humans it serves.
What Is AI Recommendation Optimization?
AI recommendation optimization (ARO) is the work of making your brand clearly understood, widely corroborated, and easy for AI systems to retrieve, so that assistants name it when buyers ask for a recommendation in your category. It overlaps with two terms you have likely heard. Generative engine optimization (GEO), a term formalized in a Princeton-led research paper accepted to KDD 2024, focuses on getting content cited inside AI-generated answers. Answer engine optimization (AEO) focuses on being the source that an AI feature uses to answer a question. ARO narrows the lens to the moment that pays the bills: when a buyer asks, “Which one should I choose?”
| Discipline | Primary goal | How success is measured | What it rewards |
| SEO | Rank pages in search results | Rankings, organic clicks | Relevance, links, technical health |
| GEO / AEO | Be cited inside AI answers | Citations, answer inclusion | Clear, sourced, extractable content |
| AI recommendation optimization | Be recommended by name | AI share of voice, accuracy, sentiment | Brand consensus across the web, entity clarity, fit for specific use cases |
ARO does not replace SEO. Google’s own documentation on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link. A weak SEO foundation, therefore, caps your AI visibility before you begin. What changes is the scoreboard. Rankings measure your position on a list. AI recommendation optimization measures whether you are in the answer at all, and what the answer says about you.
How Do You Measure Your Brand’s Current AI Visibility?
You measure AI visibility by running a fixed set of realistic buyer prompts across the major assistants, recording whether your brand appears, where it appears, and how it is described, then repeating the exercise on a schedule. Think of it as a brand tracking study with a new kind of respondent.
Start with 30 to 100 prompts that mirror how your buyers actually talk. Include category discovery (“best [category] for [audience]”), head-to-head comparisons (“[your brand] vs. [competitor]”), problem-first questions that never name a category, and reputation checks such as “What are the downsides of [your brand]?” That last prompt is the one most teams skip, and the one executives most need to see.
Run each prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude, and Copilot, and repeat each run. Answers vary between sessions, models, and users, so a single screenshot is an anecdote, not a data point. For each response, record:
- Whether your brand was mentioned and, if so, in what position.
- Whether the description is accurate on pricing, features, locations, and who you serve.
- The sentiment and any caveats attached to your name.
- Which competitors appeared, and which sources did the assistant cited.
The cited sources are the most valuable column in the spreadsheet. They are a map of where the assistant forms its opinion, and they show exactly which publications, review platforms, and communities your marketing strategy needs to reach. This is the antidote to marketing by instinct. Instead of debating opinions in a conference room, your team works from evidence about where your buyers’ trust is actually formed, and every later decision in this guide traces back to that list.
One practical detail catches many analytics teams off guard. Google now offers a Generative AI performance report in Search Console that shows which of your pages earn impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and how those impressions change over time. As Search Engine Roundtable noted, however, it does not yet show the queries or the clicks behind those impressions. Treat it as one input, keep running your own prompt tracking, and segment AI referral traffic in your analytics platform so you can see what those appearances are worth.
1. Make Your Brand an Unambiguous Entity
Before an AI assistant can recommend you, it has to be confident about who you are. Entity clarity means every credible source on the web describes your company the same way: the same name, the same category, the same audience, and the same core differentiator.
Inconsistency is more common than most leadership teams realize. The website says “revenue intelligence platform,” LinkedIn says “sales analytics,” a 2021 directory listing says “CRM add-on,” and an old press release still uses the company’s former name. A human can reconcile that. A model weighing probabilities often cannot, and it defaults to a competitor whose story is simpler.
• Here is where to start: Write a one-sentence positioning statement covering who you serve, what you do, and what makes you different. Publish it word-for-word on your About page, social profiles, directory listings, and press boilerplate.
• Add Organization, Product or Service, and LocalBusiness structured data where relevant, with sameAs links that connect your official profiles. Google notes that structured data should match the visible text on the page and that no special schema is required for its AI features. Schema supports clarity. It cannot substitute for it.
• Claim and complete your profiles on Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and the directories that matter in your industry. Google specifically advises keeping Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date to appear in its AI features.
• Earn coverage in the sources AI leans on rather than writing about yourself on them. Pew found that Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit together accounted for 15% of the sources linked in the Google AI summaries it examined.
Entity clarity is a strategy question disguised as a technical one. Brands that cannot state a point of view crisply end up with inconsistent descriptions everywhere, a problem we unpacked in Most Companies Have a Content Calendar, but No Point of View. Decide what you stand for, and the markup becomes easy.
2. Create Content Built to Be Retrieved and Quoted
Content that earns AI recommendations answers a specific question in its first sentence, backs the answer with verifiable evidence, and still makes sense when a single paragraph is lifted out of the page. That is how retrieval systems consume the web: in passages, not in pages.
Four habits separate content that gets quoted from content that gets skipped
• Lead with the answer. Open each section with a direct, complete response, then add nuance. Phrase headings the way buyers phrase questions. This article follows that format on purpose
• Replace adjectives with evidence. In the GEO study, adding statistics, credible quotations, and cited sources produced the largest visibility gains, and simply improving fluency and readability added 15% to 30% on its own. “Industry-leading onboarding” is invisible. “Customers go live in 11 days on average, based on our 2025 implementation data” is quotable.
• Build pages for the fan-out. Create dedicated pages for the specific situations buyers ask about: your offer for a particular industry, company size, budget, or use case, plus honest comparisons against named alternatives. In our experience, a comparison that admits where a competitor is the better fit earns more trust from readers, and trust is what gets repeated.
• Make the facts machine-readable. Put pricing, specifications, service areas, and integration lists in plain HTML text rather than images, PDFs, or interactive widgets. Google lists ensuring that important content is available in text form as a fundamental for its AI features. The stakes are measurable. Adobe’s AI Content Visibility Checker found that U.S. retail homepages averaged a 75% score for how much content LLMs can read, while individual product pages averaged just 66%, the weakest result of any page type, and the very place where purchase decisions happen. The most readable pages were text-heavy ones, such as FAQs (80%) and returns pages (82%).
None of this works without substance. A page engineered for extraction but empty of insight is still empty, which is the argument we made in SEO Without a Story Is Just Words on a Page. Our content marketing work at JOS begins with Deep Insight research into how buyers actually think, because the questions people ask AI are shaped by the same motivations and hesitations that shape every purchase.
3. Earn Mentions Where AI Looks for Consensus
Earned mentions are the strongest lever for optimizing AI recommendations because assistants tend to recommend brands that many independent sources already agree on. Your website makes your case. Everyone else’s websites decide whether it is believed.
The data makes this concrete. Beyond the 0.664 correlation between branded web mentions and AI Overview visibility, the Ahrefs analysis points to Seer Interactive research that found much weaker relationships between ChatGPT brand visibility and link metrics such as domain rank (0.25) and backlinks (0.10). For two decades, off-page SEO was largely a links game. For AI, it is increasingly a game of reputation.
Where to focus your effort:
• The lists AI already cites. Your audit revealed which roundups, comparison articles, and review pages the assistants reference in your category. Those are your first outreach targets, whether through expert commentary, product access for reviewers, or original data they can use.
• Review platforms your buyers trust. G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, Google reviews, and industry-specific platforms feed both live retrieval and future training data. Build a steady, genuine review program instead of a one-time push.
• Communities. Reddit and YouTube are among the most frequently linked sources in Google’s AI summaries. Show up as a disclosed, helpful expert. Communities punish marketing and reward usefulness.
• Earned media. Coverage in trade publications, podcasts, and analyst reports creates the durable third-party language that models absorb and repeat. That is why public relations has moved from a reputation line item to a core AI visibility channel.
• Expert-led social content. Substantive posts from your leaders create indexed, attributable proof of expertise. As we noted in LinkedIn Stopped Rewarding Virality and Started Rewarding Expertise, the platforms are moving in the same direction. Pair it with a social media program built on real conversations, the theme of Followers Look Good on Paper, but Conversations Are What Actually Convert.
Video deserves a special mention. A well-produced explainer that answers a genuine buyer question works twice: it reaches people directly, and its title, description, and transcript add to the body of text AI systems draw from. Our video and in-person content production team plans for both audiences from the first storyboard.
4. Manage Reputation and Sentiment
AI assistants do not just name brands. They characterize them. Ask about almost any product and the answer often includes a caveat such as “some users report slow support” or “pricing can be hard to predict.” Those caveats usually summarize recurring themes in reviews and discussions, and buyers take them seriously. In Adobe’s survey of more than 5,000 U.S. consumers, 66% said they believe AI tools provide accurate results.
That trust cuts both ways. Start with the reputation-check prompts from your audit and list every recurring criticism. Then sort them into three groups:
• Valid problems. Fix the root cause, then say so publicly in release notes, help center updates, and review responses. The fix is the marketing.
• Outdated information. Old pricing, discontinued features, or a former company name. Correct it at the source by updating directory listings, asking publishers to refresh old articles, and publishing clearly dated pages with current facts.
• Misunderstandings. Publish a plain-language FAQ that addresses the concern directly and backs the answer with evidence.
Respond to reviews thoughtfully and consistently. A measured, specific reply to a negative review is visible to buyers, retrievable by AI, and a live demonstration of what your brand does when something goes wrong. The companies that win here treat sentiment as an operating metric rather than a crisis-communications task. It is the same discipline behind earning attention that people actually value, which we explored in The Hardest Part of Marketing Today Is Getting People to Care.
Which KPIs Prove AI Recommendation Optimization Is Working?
The KPIs that prove AI recommendation optimization is working measure presence, accuracy, and business impact, in that order. A raw count of AI “mentions” is simply the newest vanity metric, and any leader who has endured dashboards full of impressions and follower counts that never reached the P&L will recognize the trap. What matters is whether you appear for the questions your best buyers ask, whether the description is right, and whether those appearances turn into revenue.
| KPI | What it tells you | How to track it |
| AI share of voice | Share of tracked prompts where your brand is named | Monthly prompt tracking across assistants |
| Recommendation position | Where you land when you are named | Same prompt set, sampled repeatedly |
| Accuracy rate | Share of answers that describe you correctly | Review against an internal fact sheet |
| Sentiment and caveats | The tone and qualifiers attached to your name | Tag each logged response |
| Citation share | How often your own pages are cited versus third parties | Record cited URLs in the audit |
| AI impressions in Google | Which pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Search Console Generative AI performance report |
| AI referral traffic and conversions | Visits and revenue that arrive from assistants | An analytics segment for AI referrers |
| Branded demand | Whether AI exposure lifts people searching for you by name | Search Console and direct traffic trends |
Pay particular attention to the quality of AI-referred visits. Adobe found that in March 2026, visitors reaching U.S. retail sites from AI sources spent 48% longer per visit and viewed 13% more pages than visitors from other channels. Google has likewise said that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with people spending more time on the site. Smaller volume at a higher value is the pattern to hope for.
Track monthly and review strategy quarterly. Answers shift as models update, so a single good month proves little, while a steady climb in share of voice and accuracy over two or three quarters is a trend you can take to the board. That is the same standard of evidence we hold ourselves to in our case studies.
A 90-Day AI Recommendation Optimization Plan
A realistic AI recommendation optimization plan spends the first month on diagnosis and foundations, the second on content, and the third on earning authority, then measures and repeats. Visibility driven by live retrieval can move within weeks. Changes to what models are absorbed in training take much longer, so set expectations with your leadership team accordingly.
Days 1 to 30: Diagnose and fix the foundation.
• Build your prompt set and record a baseline across the major assistants.
• Write your one-sentence positioning statement and align every profile to it.
• Audit robots.txt, CDN and firewall bot rules, OAI-SearchBot access, and your Search generative AI control setting.
• Correct outdated facts on directories and high-traffic third-party pages.
Days 31 to 60: Build content that can be retrieved and quoted.
• Publish or rewrite use-case, comparison, pricing, and FAQ pages with an answer-first structure.
• Replace claims with evidence: statistics, named sources, and customer data.
• Move critical information out of images and scripts into plain text.
• Start an original research asset that others will want to cite.
Days 61 to 90: Earn consensus and measure.
• Pitch the publications and roundups your audit showed AI already cites.
• Launch a steady, compliant review program.
• Begin with disclosed, expert participation in two or three relevant communities.
• Rerun the full audit and compare share of voice, accuracy, and sentiment with your baseline.
At the end of 90 days, you should know which prompts you now win, which you still lose, and why. That diagnosis becomes next quarter’s plan.
Be Found, Be Understood, Be Recommended
AI recommendation optimization rewards brands that are clearly understood, widely corroborated, and easy to verify. None of that is new. It is word-of-mouth marketing with a new and extraordinarily well-read intermediary, one that has absorbed what your customers, critics, and competitors have written about you and will summarize it in a sentence for anyone who asks.
That is exactly why guesswork fails here. Winning the recommendation means knowing which questions your buyers actually ask, what motivates them, and which sources they trust, then earning a place in each of those conversations. JOS was built to be a science-driven growth partner for exactly this kind of problem. Our proprietary Deep Insight methodology decodes the psychology behind how your buyers decide, translating behavioral and psychographic data into a clear picture of the “why” behind every choice. Our AI search optimization team then turns that understanding into an organic presence that the assistants recommend with confidence. The outcome is not a spike in impressions or another report full of vanity metrics. It is authentic market leadership, lasting trust with the buyers who matter most, and the strategic confidence of knowing precisely why it is working.
The leaders who act now will be remembered as the ones who saw this shift early and deliberately built for it. Those who wait will spend the next few years explaining to their boards why a competitor keeps getting named first.
Whether you are just getting started, leading an established business, or driving growth at the enterprise level, the first step is the same: find out what AI says about you today. Request a free consultation to see where you stand, or review our pricing options to see how we can help.
FAQs
What is AI recommendation optimization?
AI recommendation optimization is the practice of increasing the frequency, accuracy, and favorability of AI assistants’ recommendations for your brand. It combines entity clarity, evidence-rich content, earned third-party mentions, reputation management, and technical accessibility.
Is AI recommendation optimization different from SEO?
Yes, but it builds on SEO rather than replacing it. SEO aims to rank pages, while AI recommendation optimization aims to ensure your brand is named and described correctly in AI answers. Google states that pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as links in its AI features, so strong SEO remains a prerequisite.
How long does it take to see results?
Improvements tied to live web retrieval can appear within weeks of fixing access issues and publishing better content. Shifts in what models learned during training take longer, often months, because they depend on new model versions and broad changes in how the web discusses your brand.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Block selectively, not wholesale. OpenAI lets you disallow its training crawler, GPTBot, while still allowing OAI-SearchBot, which determines whether you can appear in ChatGPT search answers. Blocking Google-Extended limits Gemini training and grounding, but does not affect Google Search or AI Overviews.
Does llms.txt help AI visibility?
There is little evidence that it moves recommendations today. Google says site owners do not need AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features. It is low-cost to add, but it should never come before content, reputation, and crawl access.
